Growing up in Johannesburg, I have had some amazing biltong in my life. Anyone from or who has been to South Africa will know that biltong is part of our culture! It seemed that every local food shop had their own version for sale and in the Bedfordview area where I lived we were no exception. Biltong has been part of our lives in Africa and always will be no matter where we find ourselves in the world. |
Looking back, each year we visited my uncle & his family in East London (Eastern Cape) we would enjoy some of the best coastal wildlife, bushveld, and hunting expeditions a young boy could ever ask for… In those days I regularly saw biltong being prepped, spiced, and left to cure in the open air under the “Afdakke”. Different beef cuts or venison meats all had their own unique flavours and were topped off with a selection of uniquely blended “rubs” to produce the best possible African taste.
Birthdays were interesting, instead of a cake we would get a freshly skinned springbok placed on the kitchen table in front of us, the question was always “Do we want it braaied or made into biltong?”. A bit of both was normally the order of the day for the whole family to enjoy with a few drinks and hunting stories to share.
